What to Wear for Engagement Photos | Colorado Style Guide for Couples

January 27, 2024

What to wear, how to prep, and how to feel your best

Your engagement session is such a fun, meaningful part of your wedding experience—think of it as a chance to slow down, soak it all in, and just be together.

And don’t worry—I’ve got you every step of the way

✨What to Wear✨

Start with 1–2 Outfits

I recommend bringing:

  • One more dressy / elevated outfit
  • One more casual / cozy outfit

This gives your gallery variety without feeling overwhelming.

Best Colors for Engagement Pictures

Soft, romantic tones photograph beautifully:

  • Neutrals (cream, tan, white, black)
  • Earthy tones (sage, rust, taupe)
  • Soft pastels (dusty blue, blush, lavender)

Avoid:

  • Logos/graphics

How to Choose Outfits Based on Location

Your outfit should flow with your Colorado location, not fight against it—this makes your photos feel cohesive, elevated, and effortlessly beautiful.

Think about the overall vibe of where we’re shooting:

  • Mountain / nature sessions: earthy tones, neutrals, cozy textures
  • Open fields: soft pastels, light and airy colors, flowy pieces
  • Urban / downtown: more structured, bold, or chic looks
  • Desert / warm tones: creams, rusts, warm neutrals

If you’re unsure, send me your outfit ideas—I’m always happy to help style you 🤍

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of wearing the exact same color, aim to complement each other.

Think:

  • One in a pattern, one in a solid
  • Colors that live in the same palette

Movement is Magic

Flowy dresses, skirts, or layers add:

  • Movement
  • Texture
  • That dreamy, effortless feel ✨

Shoes Matter More Than You Think

We may walk a bit depending on your location, so:

  • Bring comfy shoes to walk in
  • Change into your cute shoes once we start

Hair, Makeup & Details

  • Go slightly more polished than your everyday look
  • Professional hair + makeup is always a YES (but not required!)
  • Clean nails (neutral tones photograph best)
  • MOISTURIZE those hands!
  • Remove Apple watches/hair ties if you don’t want them in photos

What to Expect

You do not need to know how to pose—I’ve got you!

I’ll guide you through everything in a way that feels:

  • Natural
  • Comfortable
  • Actually fun

A lot of your session will be:

  • Walking
  • Laughing
  • Snuggling in close
  • Being your real selves

Can We Bring Our Dog?

YES please 🐶 (you know I love this)

A few tips:

  • Bring a leash (even if we edit it out later)
  • Bring treats
  • Consider bringing a friend to help hold them when needed

Weather Backup Plan

Colorado likes to keep us on our toes 😅

If the weather is:

  • Super windy
  • Stormy
  • Just not it

We’ll reschedule—no stress at all 🤍 These are your engagement photos! We are going to do everything we can to ensure they’re perfect.

Final Thoughts

This session is about you and your honey. It is a MUST that you are comfortable in what you are wearing. If you wouldnt ever wear a dress – then don’t! Your engagement session isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being you.

The way you laugh together, the way you look at each other, the little in-between moments… that’s the magic ✨

I seriously cannot wait to capture this season for you.
