International Women’s Day 2017

March 8, 2017

Today is International Womens Day!

I am going to keep this post as non political as possible. Is that possible? We’ll see!

While there are protests and marches around the world for womens right, which I whole heartedly support, I am at home with my 4 year old daughter. Today we, along with my sister, painted the living room. Violet hasnt been feeling so hot because she had to have another round of vaccines to go to preschool and because she’s 4. I failed to keep track of her vaccinations – but who can blame me when we’ve switched insurances and doctors THREE times in four years! So much confusion! But anyway. She’s caught up. And now running a fever. Blah.

We took a break from painting. I opened SnapChat because I saw some friends posting their new International Womens Day filters. Violet lovessss these! I mean who doesnt?! She clicked the Frida Kahlo one and fell in LOOOVVEE! “Mommy! I’m Frida!”

Yep, she knows who Frida is. In a world full of Disney Princesses my baby knows who Frida Kahlo, Maya Angelou, Amelia Earhart and Coco Chanel are. In November Zulily had these four incredible books. I bought them instantly and gave them to her for Christmas. My husband and I are feminists. No, we do not believe women are superior. We believe women are equal. But, as I said, to keep this post non political I’m not going to argue on this ;).

When we found out we were having a girl we were over the moon! We had many talks and still do about how were going to raise her. We want her to be anything she wants to be. If she wants to be a Disney Princess, than she can. If she wants to be a race car driver, we’ll be in the stands cheering her on. We want to instill in her that there are NO limits.

When I opened the box and started reading through the books I almost cried. Theyre short stories of the lives of these incredible women. Different races, different backgrounds, women who have changed the world in their own unique way. Women who faced challenges but pushed through. I think its so important to educate our daughters AND sons about these incredible women. We’ve read through these books multiple times. I think Maya Angelou is her favorite! She of course still loves her Ana and Elsa and all her Disney Princesses – but I love that the names Frida, Maya, Coco and Amelia are relevant and relatable to her.

If there are more books like these out there can someone please let me know?!

Happy International Womens Day!
